    by Tanyamariedube from Canada

What a great show. I loved listening to your episode with Dave Lorenzo on the 60 Second Sale. As someone who loves sales (but loathed them when I started with cold calls and cold door knocking), I loved what he said about hearing the word “no”. In sales, we are trained to look for the no’s. It makes us really good at it if we can really get into it. What you two were talking about with regard to how our limitations are i’’our minds really resonated with me. I love that because it’s a game changer when you understand that sales is just about helping people solve a massive problem and getting paid for it and then taking imperfect action, get on your feet and have fun. Thanks so much! Love this show.

EA Interviews Episode 107. Inspiration, transformation, success stories, and the Imperfect Action Round seven days a week. Join Mario Fachini for today’s Expert Authority Effect Interview.

Mario Fachini [0:14]

Have you ever wanted to be on TV? Have you ever wanted to do interviews, public speaking, grow your business and gather more leads? I know I have. And I was scared to death when I started it. And some people are. Some people aren’t. Maybe I wasn’t scared to death, but I had never done it before. So there’s always that reticence of am I going to do a good job? Is it going to go the way I want it to? How do I make the audience like me? You know, maybe you’re a moron. Maybe you’re not. But either way, if you’ve never been on camera before, there’s some things you need to know and you need to pick up. One of them is making the audience laugh. That’s one of mine. So I hope you enjoyed that. But there aren’t on camera secrets you need to know. You can’t just go on camera and just, “Hi. I’m going to tell you about stuff and things and it’s going to be fantastic and you’re going to be loving this the entire time because -” right there, you can just hear in my voice and you can see that is not what you want to be doing. And I am super excited to have Adel Wilson here today. Because she is an on-camera media coach. And if you have ever spoke, gone on a podcast interview, doing your own show, have a business at all, she can help you engage with your clients, customers, prospects more effectively. And it will also create a greater ROI. I’m excited to bring her up. But first, we’re going to thank our sponsor.

Mario Fachini [1:56]

Here she is, ladies and gentlemen, the lovely Adel Wilson. How are you doing, Adel?

Adel Wilson [2:00]

I’m doing so well. It’s so great to see you, Mario.

Mario Fachini [2:04]

It’s great to see you.

Adel Wilson [2:06]

Hey, everybody. Thank you. Thank you for having me.

Mario Fachini [2:07]

I am excited for you to be sharing with Expert Authority World because there’s so many entrepreneurs out there that have the audience. They want to do stuff on camera. They do public speaking. And they need some encouragement, they need some guidance, and you can give that to them, can’t you?

Adel Wilson [2:27]

Absolutely. I’m happy to do that.

Mario Fachini [2:30]

So what inspired you to get into this? Tell me a little bit about your story and how did you get into it?

Adel Wilson [2:37]

Sure. Well, to make a very long story short, when I was around five years old, my mom put me in a beauty pageant. And I enjoyed the beauty pageant but I didn’t really love it as much. But what I quickly realized is that I love being on camera. I loved entertaining. I love kind of being in the spotlight. And so from then on, my mom put me in modeling school. And I did lots of runway shows, local ones in New York City and in Jersey. Then I got into acting. And kind of the rest is history. I started acting and doing hosting in New York City and had a few agents and managers and did that for a number of years. I coached on camera so I coached acting. I was a corporate trainer and speaker all at the same time. You know, a lot of actors what they do is they wait tables. But I always knew my dad would kill me if I waited tables. So I was a corporate trainer in Staten. So it kind of put everything together to put this amazing program together, Celebrity Media Secrets and Celebrity Media Group, my new company.

Mario Fachini [3:46]

So with all of that background and experience, what would you say was the greatest thing you took away from it?

Adel Wilson [3:55]

I took away from the entire experience?

Mario Fachini [3:57]

Yes.

Adel Wilson [4:00]

So what I failed to mention is that, in between I went to college. I went to graduate school. And I studied psychology. So the foundation of all of my programs, whether I was teaching an actor how to perform on camera or whether I was teaching a professional entrepreneur, the foundation is always psychology. The foundation is always mindset. So what I did was put together my background in marketing, business psychology, on-camera training from my experience as an actress and a host being in front of the camera, also as a producer, award winning producer behind the camera. I put all of those elements together to put together a seven step holistic media coaching program, which I think is amazing.

Mario Fachini [4:45]

Well, it is amazing. Because I remember you were sharing some of the secrets with me when we were talking. Take me through your clients and what you’re doing, who are you helping and how are you helping them?

Adel Wilson [5:00]

Absolutely. So I helped everyone from the doctor that’s looking to launch their book. So we also have a book publishing division. To the lawyer who’s looking to become a legal expert on television, but has never been in front of the cameras before. To the business coach that wants to do videos for their business. And so there’s a video production, video marketing components. Before we do any of those things, it is the seven step process. Which I’m happy to take you through as well, if you’d like briefly.

Mario Fachini [5:34]

What would you say is biggest issue that someone that’s never – let’s take an attorney because they’re in front of the courtroom. They have to perform. And maybe the doctor, you have to have the bedside manner and be nice to the patients, this and that. So there’s an element. But I’d say the attorney, I mean, he’s in front of a room and you have to perform. That’s the onstage performance if you ask me. But what about the chiropractor? What is the difference between those three? And what are the similarities you’re finding that people just need help with?

Adel Wilson [6:10]

Yes. So that’s a great question. And to be honest with you, one of my clients who is an attorney, she’s a trial attorney so she’s used to being on stage, if you will, within the courtroom and performing and public speaking. And in her testimonial, for me, talks about the fact that it is so different. It is just very different. Public speaking is very helpful with media coaching or with going on camera. However, it is not the same thing. It is very different when you put a camera in front of someone and you have to let them engage with the camera right in front of them. And come across comfortable, come across confident, come across like you’re speaking to one person. There’s something thing about that machine that’s in front of you, which kind of changes the dynamic for people. So whether they’ve spoken on stages of 15,000 or 15 people, we all start from the beginning. And the beginning for me is always mindset. And I take it from there. So we do mindset, we cover message. So there’s really no difference between, say, a trial attorney or a chiropractor if they’re both used to speaking. Now, the trial attorney may be slightly more comfortable speaking publicly. But what makes it all kind of a level playing field is that camera that’s in front of them. And if they’re not used to it, that’s what we get them running for.

Mario Fachini [7:44]

Why do you think the camera, let’s just say, wigs people out?

Adel Wilson [7:50]

You know, it’s so funny. I’ve loved the cameras. I feel like I’ve loved the cameras since I came out of my mother’s womb. It’s the truth. If you see any of my childhood videos, it’s always me loving the camera. But not everybody loves the camera. So I’ve always felt some comfortability with the camera. When you’re an actor, they tell you speak to the camera like it’s your friend. But it takes time. And you know that, Mario, because you’ve been doing this for a long time and so well, may I add. I just think it’s that that piece of machine that you have to look down the barrel of that lens and imagine that your audience is there. Imagine that your avatar is there. That your target audience is there. But speak to one person. And so I think that wigs people out a little bit and people aren’t really used to doing that sort of thing.

Mario Fachini [8:46]

So from public speaking to on camera, you go from speaking to one person, to speak into everyone in the room.

Adel Wilson [8:53]

That’s right. That’s right. Exactly.

Mario Fachini [8:56]

What is something else that someone should consider before going on-camera?

Adel Wilson [9:00]

So there’s so many things to consider. Your wardrobe should be one. So before we started our interview, we’re talking about the color green on camera, which I happen to be wearing today. But I would not recommend, for most people that are not familiar with maybe the production studio that they’re going into if they’re filming in a production studio, because there could be a green screen. And so the green screen would be the background right behind you. And so if you’re wearing anything in that green family, it will essentially will be invisible. You will be invisible. And so we don’t want that. So knowing what colors to wear on camera, knowing your brand, being brand congruent, wearing makeup on camera. And yes, men wear makeup on camera as well.

Mario Fachini [9:50]

Loose powder.

Adel Wilson [9:51]

A little loose powder, right, Mario?

Mario Fachini [9:53]

Absolutely.

Adel Wilson [9:55]

So all of those things come into play. Having the correct audio. Now everyone is doing their business videos. And so a lot of gurus out there say, “Hey, just grab your iPhone, throw your iPhone app, and just start recording.”

Mario Fachini [10:09]

Yeah. Throw your iPhone app and out the door.

Adel Wilson [10:13]

Exactly. Exactly. So I see that and I cringe because I see a lot of people doing that. Like, “Hey, that’s okay.” They don’t have their message. They haven’t scripted anything. Their lighting is completely off. They have no makeup on. And I’ve seen people look amazing at a networking event. And say, I’ve seen real estate professionals at a networking event and then all of a sudden because they’ve heard someone say, “Hey, grab your iPhone.” They grab it when they’re for some reason wearing a t-shirt and they’re completely off brand. So there’s so many elements that go into performing on camera and preparation before you go on camera. And that’s a lot of it. And as I mentioned before the audio. Sometimes you have a great message to share, but you don’t know what you’re doing on camera. And so your audio was completely off. Your message is completely lost. There’s so many things. But those are just a few.

Mario Fachini [11:10]

Since you started taking on private clients, what’s the biggest transformation you’ve been able to give one of them?

Adel Wilson [11:16]

That’s a great question, Mario. Thank you so much for asking. So one of my clients, her name is Jessica Ramirez. Hi, Jessica, if you’re watching. She’s amazing. She’s a trial attorney. And she’s a personal injury attorney. That’s her specialty. And her law firm hired me to work with her with her branding because she’s a managing attorney at one of their divisions. And I’ve seen a massive, massive transformation with Jessica in under two months. Now, what they did is they did the elite one-on-one coaching program which includes VIP production day. And we can talk about the elements that go into that. But essentially, it’s coaching one-on-one through my seven step system, followed by a full day on set in the studio, where we have celebrity makeup artist and celebrity hairstylist, we do a photo session. Which results in headshots as well. So complete branding. We had them on a few different sets. We do a signature interview. And obviously, prior to that I’m coaching the person so that they feel comfortable with the media interview.

Mario Fachini [12:32]

Had she done anything made that camera prior to working with you?

Adel Wilson [12:36]

So you know what’s funny, she had done some work before on TV as a legal expert but didn’t feel fully comfortable. And once we started working together – about two weeks before our coaching program ended, she said, “Adele, I booked the pilot as a host.” So it’s very different to come in just as a legal commentator and then to book a hosting gig, which was not necessarily what I was even preparing her for. Although my program does cover that. So if you’re hosting your own business videos, it helps as well. If you’re hosting for TV, I can prep the person for their auditions. In this case, I couldn’t have been happier. Two weeks before our coaching program ended, that was a result. And then after that, she’s booked a few other gigs as well. And now she’s a regular on Law & Crime. And she’s amazing and I’m so proud of the work. For me, that’s the biggest transformation that I’ve seen. And she’s amazing.

Mario Fachini [13:40]

Well, I’m happy to hear that. It sounds like she’s a lot more confident, like you said, to go from commentating, which is good because most people never get on TV or even on camera. And now she is the host of a pilot.

Adel Wilson [13:54]

Yes. Yes. And she and she’s been doing so many other things as well and a lot of other opportunities coming her way. I don’t want to divulge too much. It’s not like her to do that but –

Mario Fachini [14:05]

You can just say – it sounds like it’s well. I’ll say it’s sounds like it’s going well.

Adel Wilson [4:08]

Going really well. It’s going really, really well. We’re really proud of the work she’s doing.

Mario Fachini [14:12]

Well, I’m happy to hear that. So let’s dive into your process. I know you said you wanted to share some of that. And I’m going to have a little duh, not a disclaimer because that sounds boring and legal ease and it’s not me. But in full transparency, if you’re listening to this, head on over to EAInterviews.com and check out the show notes page, because we are recording this live and there’s a full video. So you can see what we’re doing, in addition to listening to it. So head on over to the show notes page on EA Interviews and you’ll be able to see both of us talking to each other. And we’re doing this live. So if you’re listening to this again, that’s some more context for you. All right. So let’s talk about your process. Since we’re talking about being on camera and we are on camera. And now, I don’t need to edit out every time we talk about being on camera. Let’s just start with step one. You said you got a seven step process, walk me through it.

Adel Wilson [15:11]

Absolutely. So I’m happy to walk you through it. So I’ll preface it by saying one of the biggest mistakes that I think other media coaches make is that they throw their clients on camera immediately. Huge mistake, whether you’re an actor preparing for a role, whether you’re an attorney, whether you’re a physician, whether you’re a chiropractor. My system is a holistic, proprietary, unique seven step system. And as I mentioned before, in honor of my degrees in psychology, I always start with mindset.

Mario Fachini [15:44]

So is this step one you’re saying?

Adel Wilson [15:46]

It is step one. So step one is mindset. As you know, it’s the foundation of everything. It’s really how you approach, how you approach your material, how you approach the camera. It’s kind of that preparation that happens behind the scenes internally before we put you on camera. So some of the things that we do, I have my clients create vision boards. And that’s honestly one of the most transformational, believe it or not, aspects of that mindset stage. Or at least that’s what my clients tell me is that they love that. I’ve had readers of my book, Celebrity Media Secrets, they’ve written to me and they sent me pictures of their vision boards. They’re like, “Look, I was on my business trip, I read your book. And look at the vision board that I put together.” So mindset. Having your goals in front of you all of the time. Meditation, visualization, all of those good things, breathing techniques, so all of those things are some of the elements that go into that mindset step. And then from mindset, we talk about message. So what is the message that you want to convey? What is the message that you want to share with your readers, with your audience, with your patients, or clients. Whomever your audience is, what is that message? And then we talk about a media friendly message. Because when you’re on camera and if you’re lucky enough to get called to do TV, or to do radio, or to do a podcast like this, we have to try to keep the stories succinct, we have to try to keep everything short and to the point. Which I’m going to try to do here with Mario. And so we have a 30 second and a 15 second elevator pitch media friendly message. So that’s message. And then we go into image.

Mario Fachini [17:47]

So this is three?

Adel Wilson [17:50]

So image is number three. So it’s mindset is number on. Then message, then image. And its really image and branding. But we’ll say image. And it’s how you put yourself together on camera. Are you brand congruent?

Mario Fachini [18:04]

Elaborate on that for me. Because that’s a good teaching point. And you kind of talked about it with the attorney – no – the real estate agent rolling up with a t-shirt.

Adel Wilson [18:15]

Hopefully that person’s not watching but they may or may not know who they are. But I’ve seen it happen with so many different people.

Mario Fachini [18:21]

I was just going to say that person. I could give you a list of, let’s say, more than that person. But continue.

Adel Wilson [18:28]

Yes. Yes. Absolutely. So I love how you put yourself together, Mario. So you have your background. I love the teal, the tie. Everything looks great. Everything is congruent. And so when I run into you in a professional situation, I would expect that you would look somewhat – somewhat like you are presenting yourself today. But it’s not so much how you present yourself outside and networking, although that’s important as well. Clearly. But how you present yourself on camera should be the way or the best version of yourself. I would say, be yourself but be the best version of yourself. So what is your client expects you to speak like? What is your client expecting you to dress like? What would your marketing materials, how should they look? Are they elevated? Is there something missing there? Is there something missing on your website? We do a website audit. So there’s a lot of different things that go into your image and your brand and it’s not just the clothes that you wear but everything all together. Yes. Would you want me to elaborate a little bit more?

Mario Fachini [19:50]

If you want to. I was expecting the next point.

Adel Wilson [19:54]

Oh, okay. Yes. From image and branding then we take it up to media. This is the on camera training. So media training. This is when we put you on camera. We teach the person teleprompter, which is a great way.

Mario Fachini [20:08]

And what is that for someone who doesn’t know?

Adel Wilson [20:10]

Absolutely. So sometimes you see the leader of our country speaking. And this person sometimes they go off the cuff. You can think of anyone, any president, any US president that we’ve seen –

Mario Fachini [20:27]

Or TV hosts.

Adel Wilson [20:28]

Or TV hosts. Exactly. They have a teleprompter in front of them, typically. Unless they’re interviewing a person. And it’s basically the words on the screen that will direct them to what they need to say – as to what they need to say to them, if you will. So I teach my clients teleprompter. It’s like a script on a screen. I guess that’s the best way to describe it. And the script as you speak, if you have a teleprompter operator. Which if you’re in a professional studio, you would. And we do that with our clients. They would as you’re speaking, follow your pace, and they would scroll up, scroll down, stop, that sort of thing. So the teleprompter helps you script your videos. And it is a wonderful, wonderful asset and is a really great skill to have. But it is a skill that needs to be learned. Because some people can just look at the words on the screen and start reading. And that’s not the aim of the teleprompter. The idea is to look and appear natural as you’re reading the material. So that’s media training. And then obviously, we go into a lot of the things that we discussed. How are you dressing on camera. And we teach them different things, different little tricks and strategies and tips to appear professional, appear on brand, and do it in a way that’s concise and powerful. We teach them how to host. We teach them the media interviews, all that good stuff.

Mario Fachini [22:04]

Do you have another tip on top of those? Step I mean. Do you have another step on top of those?

Adel Wilson [22:11]

Yes, I do. I do. So media, then marketing. So once you have all of these elements together, how do you market yourself? How are you marketing your book? How are you marketing yourself online? The video marketing piece is very, very important. And not just the video marketing piece, which I know is one of your specialties as well, Mario.

Mario Fachini [22:33]

It’s a lot of fun. Everyone should be on video.

Adel Wilson [22:35]

Isn’t it fun?

Mario Fachini [22:36]

Absolutely.

Adel Wilson [22:37]

It’s really one of the best ways to market yourself. And 80% of content online by the end of this year will be video. And so if people are not doing videos for their business, then they’re really not taking their competition seriously. And they’re really not competing at all. And so it’s important to keep that in mind. Also, we talked about the importance of reaching out to agents, managers, being prepared. All of the things that that go into play with that. So having your headshot, having your sizzle reel, all of the things that will make you a media professional. Even if you’re kind of a newbie that would attract someone like a producer from a local station to call you and maybe have you on as an expert. So we talked about all that good stuff. And then from marketing, we talk about momentum. Because once you’ve got the ball rolling – and I always tell my clients, “Once I train you, I promise you opportunities will be coming your way. You’re going to have to be able to manage them but you have to – once that momentum is created, you have to just jump on the bandwagon and move forward with it.” Because you don’t want to lose momentum. And then the last piece is called make a difference. Because I think that to whom much has been given, much is expected. And so make a difference is the last piece. Where, once you get there, once you’ve achieved that celebrity status, if you will, and even on your way there, it’s about giving back. So giving back, whether it’s to a charity, whether giving your time at a homeless shelter, your nonprofit of choice. Perhaps sitting on a board of an organization and giving your time and contributing that way. It’s really about contribution and giving back. So those are my seven steps to becoming a celebrity or thought leader in your industry.

Mario Fachini [24:45]

I love those. Because you have it clear and concise and so many people want to be doing this but they think, “What’s the mic? What’s the camera? What’s this thing?” I asked some

leaders in the industry, friends of mine, and I’m going, “Do you get a lot of technical questions?” And they’re like, “Yes. Like, what do I do for the mic? What’s that boom arm?” It’s like it doesn’t really matter what you start with. It’s where are you going? And I love the fact that you were talking about the vision board. Because if you don’t have that vision moving forward, what do you have?

Adel Wilson [25:26]

You need one. You have to. You have to know your three year, five year, ten year and beyond. What you’re expecting of yourself of your company, if you’re running a business? Where do you see yourself? And because if you don’t, what direction are you going in? So you’d be directionless, if you will. You’d be running around without a GPS. I think a vision board is a great GPS for everyone out there.

Mario Fachini [25:54]

That’s a good point. That’s a real good point. And it kind of made me think of what life was like before GPS is running around, driving around, whatever it was. It’s like I can’t imagine having a map the width of a car while you’re driving open looking for a line the size of a pencil.

Adel Wilson [26:13]

I don’t know how people did it before. I’m so thankful. I live on ways and my GPS in my car. And that vision board is really –

Mario Fachini [26:22]

The direction you’re going.

Adel Wilson [26:23]

The direction. And so is my seven step process. And I created it specifically that way because we don’t want to start with the marketing first. We don’t want to start with the message first. I did it in a way that’s so methodical and that makes so much sense. And also that I think is also easiest for my clients to digest, if you will. It’s a lot of work on the part of my clients as well. So it’s just not me. I work really hard for my client but my client puts in just as much time and effort. And that’s how they really are able to see results.

Mario Fachini [27:03]

And you’re getting a for them. And that’s the cool part.

Adel Wilson [27:05]

Yeah. I’m really excited about that. I’m really excited. You know, one of the things that I sort of left out and I sort of mentioned – alluded to earlier was the VIP production day. And so with the VIP production day, that really puts that person who’s never been in a studio before, never been in that environment, which is most entrepreneurs or professionals, right? It puts them right in that element so that. They see, “Yes. This is a 14 person crew. This is not just one-on-one.” And you have to be comfortable to speak to the camera even though there’s 16 other people looking on and three other cameras. And someone coming up to you on the break and touching up your makeup. So once we train them, we put them in that environment. So that the next time when ABC calls – I’m sorry, I shouldn’t mention a network. When the big networks call, they are prepared and they are ready. And they are seen as the media professional that they are.

Mario Fachini [28:07]

What would you say is a huge takeaway you’ve noticed with your clients having that intimate, immersive, experiential Media Day – VIP day? What’s the transformation you’re seeing when they come in? Do any of them seem nervous before they’re coming in? And then how are they at the end of the day?

Adel Wilson [28:28]

I’m so glad that you asked that question. Because I work with them. We work so hard prior to going on set. So that’s why I mentioned that my client was booked as a host on a pilot two weeks before the coaching program was over, which means we hadn’t even gone to set yet. But I had already put that person on camera, already worked through their image and their branding, we’ve worked through their wardrobe. We have the wardrobe stylist there. But prior to that, I have them bring their clothing to me. We work through what’s media friendly clothing, what wardrobe they should have. So by the time they get there, they’re really not as nervous. They’re really not. I mean, kudos to them. But I do prep them and we prep them on their interviews as well. We go through what are the main questions that they should be – or what are the main questions I’ll be going through. And probably what the main questions are that they will be asked as an expert when they go on their other media interviews. So that they know their material front and back. Part of being confident on camera is knowing your message inside and out. And if nothing else, we really drill that. So they really feel comfortable. They walk in. We have an assistant for them, they walk them into their private dressing room. We have the hair and makeup people there. And I just also like to create an environment of comfort for them. So everyone on my team, they’re all great people, nice people. But I warn my clients, you’re going to run into all sorts of people in the media industry. So get prepared. So I have an amazing group of people. It’s not always going to be that way. But it’s thrown –

Mario Fachini [30:25]

Have you ever considered throwing an audible in there and just like intentionally hiring someone that’s going to not be nice to them just to prep them?

Adel Wilson [30:31]

Maybe I should do that. That’s not a bad idea. I think I may do that for my next client.

Mario Fachini [30:38]

I did a training – in person training and it was about how to focus and get more stuff done and make effective use of your time and everything. And everyone sitting in the room and there was maybe 20-ish. And I go “Okay. We’re going to -” something I teach called Black 15 time. We’re going to focus for 15 minutes and do all this. And you know, how do I write a book? How do I do a show? How do I get my work done? How do I follow up with – pick something. Just focus for 15 minutes.

Adel Wilson [31:07]

Yeah. So increase your productivity.

Mario Fachini [31:11]

I was thinking, like, what can I do with them and everything. And I go, “Oh my gosh.” So I brought a couple of cell phones with timers going off every, like, minute-and-a-half a piece and just stashed them in different places. And it’s like, “Okay. We’re going to focus. It’s going to be all Vinyasa breathing and it’s all nice.” And about two minutes into it andd everyone’s like, “What’s going on?” I’m like, “You’re running low on time. Are you doing your work or are you getting distracted?” And they didn’t shut up for about five minutes.

Adel Wilson [31:41]

I love that. I love that. That’s a really good lesson.

Mario Fachini [31:45]

So I don’t know, maybe you want to insert some – let’s call them audibles or something in there.

Adel Wilson [31:51]

Yes. Some distractions in there because it happens. It happens. But yes, that’s a good point. That’s a really good point. But yes, we get them focused enough. So that the 14 person crew, the makeup artists, it’s like, “Let me give you a quick touch up.” They’re focused. They’re looking right at the camera and they’re like, “Adele, we’re ready to go.” The teleprompter operator is ready to go. Once we say three, two, one, they’re ready. They’re ready. But it’s because they’ve done the work we put in.

Mario Fachini [32:18]

It’s all proper planning.

Adel Wilson [32:20]

That’s right. All the proper planning, all of the coaching, and all of the work that they’ve done. You know, full disclosure. It’s not just the coaching that happens in the session. But after each session, I offer my clients a little homework. We mentioned one of them already, which is a vision board. But that’s for mindset. For each one of my steps, I have a workbook, like a guide, really, a manual that I provide for them. And there’s a number of questions that we go through. And then the following week, we review those questions and we move on to the next step. So it’s really methodical. And they really do feel comfortable.

Mario Fachini [32:57]

So what I’m hearing a lot of is you have to prep to get on camera, but once you do take some time to evaluate what’s going on so you’re not just aimlessly doing it 15 times and not learning from each experience.

Adel Wilson [33:12]

Absolutely. And each experience will be different. This podcast is a little bit different than even I’m used to. And so network television will be different. Your video, your business videos for social media will be slightly different. And probably a more scaled down production crew as well. Some people is just admin and their iPhone. So yes, every scenario is different. And we need to prepare the person for every eventuality. Media interviews whether they’re three minutes or 45 minutes. Prepping them so that understand their  message and what they want to convey.

Mario Fachini [33:49]

Yeah. Because when you’re going on camera, it doesn’t matter if it’s remote, in person, in front of people. Even if you are using maybe not an iPhone, I prefer Android. But even if you’re doing quick video while you’re walking into somewhere, everything has its place. But it’s being able to be comfortable in any of those settings. It’s not just sticking to one you’re comfortable with. And I learned a lot of different things from reading books. And you were talking about your book. Let’s talk a little bit more about that. How has your book helped your business since you launched it last year?

Adel Wilson [34:30]

Great question. So my book, Celebrity Media Secrets, everyone. Seven simple steps to present with power, poise and style on camera, get booked on TV and media, and become a celebrity in your industry. So this is actually my third book. It is a best seller on Amazon. And of course it’s out. I wouldn’t be on this podcast, I’m sure, if I didn’t have a book. So a book opens up so many opportunities. And attracts so many media opportunities too, for me, to my clients. It really is a great step in the whole media process, if you will. So as a media coach, I like that holistic approach. So it’s the book. It’s also your business videos. It’s also your social media. It’s also getting on television. It’s also doing these podcasts. And being prepared to not just do the audio portion but also the video portion as well. But yes, the book, I mean amazing. And it also helped me because it helped me solidify my process. It helped me really build the process. It took me about a year to put together. And the book is really my signature process from which I do my elite coaching. Hopefully soon, my online course. And all of the coaching that I do, my talks everything comes from this book. And so having the book opens up so many opportunities. So I could not encourage the people more to write a book.

Mario Fachini [36:10]

Let’s talk about something else the books done for you. Your VIP Book Launch Party. You definitely couldn’t have that without – you can’t have a book launch party without a book.

Adel Wilson [36:22]

Right. And so that’s the –

Mario Fachini [36:23]

And what you’ve done for the media and the coaching. I mean, I know – go into detail about how you leveraged that for media appearances and more on camera.

Adel Wilson [36:33]

Yes. Thank you for asking. Yes. So March 28th is when I had my official VIP Book Launch Party. And it was also my official launch of Celebrity Media Group, my media and marketing agency.

Mario Fachini [36:48]

Which was about three months after your book launched.

Adel Wilson [36:52]

Correct. That is correct. So I first did a launch on Amazon where we did pre-sales on Amazon. And that’s how it became a best selling book. And then we had the official launch in March. And so I had the book on the Kindle version. And then for the party is when I launched the hardcover as well as the paperback. And it was fantastic. We had the second repeat. So as the guests approached, we had a red carpet. We had the press there. So they did red carpet interviews. And just to get people to feel of what it’s really like to be a celebrity in your industry. And then we proceeded into the party. It was great. It was really, really beautiful. It’s right on the water overlooking the New York City skyline. I had a stage built. I had my audio visual team there. My production team there. I had a good friend of mine who actually, he’s a TV host and actor and we’ve known each other for years. He interviewed me on stage. And that’s the just another way to create celebrity. And so that’s a great way to market not only your business, but your book.

Books are important. You know, I can’t say more about how important that really, really is to open up those opportunities for the press, to attract the press to come and cover your events and to really bring more folks out. So it was a great turnout. We had a great time. And I’m sorry, you couldn’t make it, Mario. But hopefully for the next one.

Mario Fachini [38:33]

Well, I’m glad it turned out well for you. Because I know we were talking about it beforehand. And I’m super excited for you.

Adel Wilson [38:39]

Yes.  Yes. It was really fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Yes. I can send over some footage for you. But it was really, really wonderful. And it is really a wonderful way to, again, market your book. And not a lot of people do that. The book signing was clearly a part of that as well. And I do events for folks as well for my authors. So if that’s something that they’re interested in doing, we can emulate on a smaller scale or on a larger scale something like what I did from my book.

Mario Fachini [39:09]

Yeah. It’s always fun. I know when I did mine, it was like, I just want to go here. And then about a day later I was like, here, here, here. And after five days of that, I go, “Screw it. I want all this.”

Adel Wilson [39:19]

You want it all. You want it all. And it’s great. And I seen some of your work. So I know you’re doing an amazing job as well for you and your clients.

Mario Fachini [39:27]

You’re too kind. Thank you.

Adel Wilson [39:29]

Yes, of course.

Mario Fachini [39:29]

So one last question for you and I call this the Expert Authority Roller Coaster, because business is always in a straight line going up. What would you say is something you’ve really had to overcome that’s given you the biggest breakthrough in the course of your business? Like a turning point for you.

Adel Wilson [39:53]

I have to overcome. Well, I would say – I don’t know. I’d have to put a little thought to that. I was going to say, I guess, some advice for maybe new entrepreneurs coming in. And that would be

save your money. So if you’re coming out of the corporate world, have a cushion, have at least – I’d like to believe that it’s important to have at least six to 12 months of living expenses before you move forward and have your own business. Because there are – listen, it’s a rollercoaster. You put out your material while you’re working things out, and acquiring clients, and getting your system together, putting your team together if you have a team. It’s really important to have that cushion and be comfortable and not have to worry about next month’s bills. So to me, that’s been a lesson that – thank God – knew going in. Because I had listened to other entrepreneurs talk about the importance of that. But I think that’s one of the most important takeaways for newcomers. I would have to think about what I’ve had to overcome.

Mario Fachini [41:12]

That’s a good tip though right there. Because some people think. “I’ll start a business and it’s just going to go. Everything’s going to go right.” I’m like, ‘I’d like to think I’m creative, but holy smokes.”

Adel Wilson [41:24]

Yeah. So in my book, one of the first things I say, “Build it and they will come.” That is not true. That is not true. And it takes time as you’re building. So having that cushion, that financial cushion before you start and as you’re progressing and as you’re looking to attract more clients and build your business and grow, expand, and progress. I think that’s one of the best tips as an entrepreneur coming in.

Mario Fachini [41:50]

All right. Now the opposite side, happy. We’re going to go to, would you rather skydive or scuba dive?

Adel Wilson [42:02]

Wow. That’s tough. Skydive or scuba dive? I think skydive. I think skydiving.

Mario Fachini [42:09]

Into the ocean and scuba diving with the tank on your back from the plane?

Adel Wilson [42:12]

Yeah. No. I don’t think the scuba diving is my thing. Yes. I think the skydiving might be something I would try. But only if you try it with me, Mario.

Mario Fachini [42:27]

Sounds like fun.

Adel Wilson [42:28]

What do you say?

Mario Fachini [42:29]

Have you ever heard of Halo diving? Halo jump?

Adel Wilson [42:34]

No, I haven’t. What’s that?

Mario Fachini [42:35]

Where you jumped at about 30,000 feet and stuff at 12 to 15. You need supplemental oxygen.

Adel Wilson [42:41]

Have you tried that?

Mario Fachini [42:42]

Not yet.

Adel Wilson [42:45]

How about you go first on that one. I’ll watch you and then I’ll go after you.

Mario Fachini [42:50]

I thought you just said we’re going to do it together.

Adel Wilson [42:53]

Yes. But 30,000 feet and everything else –

Mario Fachini [42:57]

Okay. Fine. 29,000. I’m sure the first –

Adel Wilson [43:02]

I could maybe be persuaded. But you go first. I’ll watch you.

Mario Fachini [43:08]

Here. Can you like this for a second?

Adel Wilson [43:10]

Yes, exactly.

Mario Fachini [43:12]

All right. On that note, we’re going to thank our sponsor and we’re going to come back for the Imperfect Action Round.

Mario Fachini [43:34]

All right. And I am back with the lovely Adele Wilson. Adele, are you ready for the Imperfect Action Round?

Adel Wilson [43:41]

I think so.

Mario Fachini [43:42]

Do you like taking imperfect action?

Adel Wilson [43:45]

I’m a Virgo so I’m a bit of a perfectionist. But if – you know something? What you just said right now helps me answer the previous question about overcoming. And perfectionism is something that I’ve been trying to overcome. My clients love it. It works on set. It works in the production setting. But imperfect action is something that sometimes we, as entrepreneurs, need to do. Some action sometimes is better, even if it’s not perfect. So I’m ready.

Mario Fachini [44:16]

I am so tempted. I have the normal questions. I was just about to go, “All right. So when you’re stealing cars where do you like to hide them?” That’s not the real question. I’m just messing with you.

Adel Wilson [44:29]

That’s a good one. But that’s good. Because that feels like, “What did you do?”

Mario Fachini [44:32]

But I could tell you don’t like my imperfect action. I’m like, “How can I mess with her just a little bit?” All right. So the first one –

Adel Wilson [44:40]

What’s the real one?

Mario Fachini [44:48]

The real one is – the real one is, what is the fastest path to the cash?

Adel Wilson [44:53]

The fastest path to the cash is online video, video marketing. If you have a business, as I mentioned before, 80% of content online will be video by the end of this year, 2019. And so if you’re not doing video, you’re missing a whole, whole lot. So I think that’s the fastest way to the cash.

Mario Fachini [45:18]

Okay. Number two, what is the biggest problem you see your prospects making and the fastest way they can fix it?

Adel Wilson [45:26]

I think one of the biggest problems that I see people make is not wanting to invest in themselves. So whether that’s hiring a business coach, hiring a media coach. They want to go on camera and some of them, as I mentioned, they do. I see a lot of people online, like I said, they just grab the iPhone and they’re ready to go without audio, without wardrobe, without a message, without scripting.

Mario Fachini [45:50]

Yeah. What do you need all that for? It’s time consuming.

Adel Wilson [45:52]

Right. Exactly. Exactly. But then they kind of look a little silly on camera when they’re unprepared.

Mario Fachini [45:58]

Their brand new to pajamas. They’re brand new. They just got them.

Adel Wilson [46:03]

Don’t make me laugh. I’ve yet to see the pajamas one but I’m sure there’s people out there. But definitely the t- shirt thing. But video is fantastic for business but only done correctly. If it’s done incorrectly, not a good look. And what you’re really looking to build, not just by having a book but by also engaging your prospects and your clients on video, is to build that trust element. So you want them to know you, to like you, to trust you. And if you can’t be trusted to put together a short video sharing your message and it’s not being conveyed or they’re distracted because the audio is off, or they’re distracted because you’re in congruent with your brands. It’s not good. So doing videos fantastic. We should all do it, but do it the right way. And so not hiring a coach or not investing in yourself, I would say.

Mario Fachini [47:07]

Number three, what is the best way to maximize customer lifetime value?

Adel Wilson [47:16]

Oh, I love that. That’s a great question. Mario, you have some really good questions today. So maximizing – tell me that again, maximizing the lifetime value of your client.

Mario Fachini [47:27]

I have great questions everyday.

Adel Wilson [47:28]

Okay. Great.

Mario Fachini [47:30]

What is the best way to maximize customer lifetime value?

Adel Wilson [47:34]

Yes. So I think in my case, I have a suite of services that I offer. So if they come in to me for media training, and we’ve got them on camera, then the next step is writing your book. If they come to Celebrity Media Group to me to write a book and publish the book and make them a best seller, the next obvious step is to get them on camera. Now, they need to be able to talk about the book. They need to be able to conduct interviews and be interviewed by the fabulous likes of Mario Fachini and others. There’s really only one. It’s just Mario.

Mario Fachini [48:14]

Well, that’s good. Because a lot of people don’t have a suite and they’re like a one trick pony. “I’m here. I have a business. Buy from me.”

Adel Wilson [48:24]

Exactly. Exactly. Or enrolling them in your program. Maybe you have a 12 month coaching program, that’s another great way to have to extend that value, if you will. And so I think that’s important. And if you’re great at what you do, you shouldn’t have a problem enrolling them year after year, depending upon what you’re sharing. Maybe you have different levels of your coaching program for beginners and on up to your VIP level, perhaps. And so I think that’s a great way to maximize the lifetime value.

Mario Fachini [48:57]

Great answers. Great answers. What is a book that has really made a difference in your business that you could recommend?

Adel Wilson [49:03]

Oh my gosh. I read a book a number of years ago called The Compound Effect. And are you familiar with that book, Mario?

Mario Fachini [49:13]

Darren Hardy.

Adel Wilson [49:14]

Darren Hardy. Exactly. Exactly. I went to a networking event -, I went to actually a marketing conference about ten years ago or so – maybe eight or ten years ago, right around when the book was coming out. And he was a guest there. And he gave out his book for free to all of the attendees. There were about five or 600 of us there. And I read the book from cover to cover on one of my trips – one of my business trips to Vegas by the pool at the Venetian, I’ll ever forget. And it was fantastic. And that was a very motivational book. And one that I would recommend, whether you’re an entrepreneur – to anyone that’s looking to elevate their brand to grow. It talks a lot about goal setting. And I think that’s really, really important. So The Compound Effect. There’s a shout out to Darren Hardy.

Mario Fachini [50:00]

That is a great a great, great, great recommendation. Thank you for that. Where can people learn more?

Adel Wilson [50:09]

Thank you. So people can learn more by visiting my website, www.AdelWilson.com, A-D-E-L-W-I-L-S-O-N. And please visit me. We are awaiting all of you and we have a nice little gift for you as well.

Mario Fachini [50:28]

Mario Fachini [50:51]

Adel Wilson [50:53]

My pleasure. My pleasure. Of course.
